Is it even worth it to keep my 12 (almost 13) year old dog on pet insurance when most of her medical care is pre-existing (allergies) or should I take the monthly fee for insurance and put it in a savings account only for her medical bills?
I currently have Hartville, with a $500 deductible and a 70% reimbursement, with an annual limit of $4K. The monthly fee is about $100. She has a ton of issues relating to allergies, which are "pre-existing", so I already have to pay out of pocket for her special food, and two types of medication. She recently had an ear infection which Hartville considered pre-existing due to her allergies... Unfortunately my sweet old lady was recently diagnosed with arthritis. This met her deductible so theoretically, other things relating to her arthritis should be cover by 70%. But I'm not sure if this coverage is actually saving me any money? For example, she's trying a new supplement, if that doesn't work, then Oct I'd like to get the Adequanยฎ *Canine* shot for her. Which is 2x/week for a month, then as needed afterward. Each shot is about $60, so with insurance, in Oct I'd be paying $100 (fee) + $480 (8 shots). If the full reimbursement went through I'd get about $336 back. But if she didn't have any issues for a few months, I'd still make up that $336 by not having to pay the $100 fee. It's just been such a pain with pet insurance, and most of her issues are from "allergies" so they won't be covered. I'm not sure what to do.
